HOLMDEL SKI CLUB – JULY 2008 – PRE TRIP ANNOUNCEMENT:

Greetings to the Holmdel Ski Club members and friends!

This mail serves as a pre-announcement of the trips that the HSC Executive Committee has planned for the club for the 2009 ski season.

We plan to formally announce our trips via e-mail on August 4 and make our web page descriptions and forms available on August 6 for signup (http://www.holmdelskiclub.org).  Some of our trips will have less space than in the past so we want to make sure that you have sufficient time to think about the trips and be ready to make a quick decision once they are formally announced.

We are pleased to announce our week-long destination to Whitefish Mountain Resort (previously Big Mountain Resort) in Montana (http://www.skiwhitefish.com/).  Whitefish is large, un-crowded, suitable for all levels, low elevation, and has an excellent record of annual snow fall.  It is close to Glacier National Park, giving us the opportunity to take a day trip into the park on Nordic skis or snowshoes.  We will fly into Glacier Park International Airport, only 19 miles from the resort.  We will be staying at the elegant, yet casual, Kandahar Lodge (http://www.kandaharlodge.com/), which trip leaders from other clubs have described as simply wonderful.   It is ski-in, walk-out.  But just to add a little something extra to the trip we are including a one day bus charter across the border into British Columbia to Fernie Alpine Resort (http://www.skifernie.com/the-mountain/mountain-guide.aspx).  Fernie is the fourth largest ski resort in Canada; it has smooth and gentle as well as steep and deep.  People can stay on the groomed trails or they can dip in and out off the groomed trails to try as much as they like of the powder, trees, semi-steep slopes, or small bumps.

The dates for the Whitefish/Fernie trip are February 1 to February 8.  We have 36 airline seats and will probably not be able to obtain any more, so if you are interested, please do not delay in signing up for the trip.  We do have a few more beds than airline seats in case our West Coast members want to take advantage of the Amtrak service to Whitefish.

Our first weekend trip will be over Martin Luther King weekend, Fri, Jan 16 through Mon., Jan 19.  Based on the very positive comments and survey results from participants last year, we are returning to Sugarloaf, Maine (http://www.sugarloaf.com/TheMountain/terrain.html).  Sugarloaf is the largest resort in the East with 1400 acres and a vertical of 2820 feet.  It has the only above treeline skiing serviced by a lift in the East.   It has terrain for everyone from beginner to expert.  We will again be staying in the Sugarloaf Inn, which is located slopeside and contains a very nice restaurant and pub.

We are still trying to find another attractive destination at an affordable price for our second weekend trip.  We are expecting that trip to be the weekend of February 26 through March 1 but have not selected a definite destination yet.
